HISTORY
Developer Kenneth E. Behring sought to build communities for retirees that offered the low maintenance of condominium living with the privacy afforded by single-family homes. Behring came from humble beginnings in Wisconsin. He began selling cars at a young age and excelled as a salesman. He opened his own Pontiac dealership and by the time he was 27 years old, he amassed a million-dollar fortune, which was significant wealth in the 1950s. Despite his success in the auto industry, Behring's real passion was building. He followed his dream and headed to sunny South Florida in 1956 to develop apartments in Fort Lauderdale. Frustrated by building codes in Fort Lauderdale, Behring and his team decided to start their own city. They acquired uninhabitable acreage in present-day Tamarac and carried out the daunting task of clearing the land and drudging canals.
Behring's developments offered a fun active lifestyle for retirees with a host of amenities from golfing to swimming. The association took care of maintaining the residences for a $23.00 monthly fee. The developments were an instant success and Behring had to purchase more land to keep up with the demand. As all-age communities began to spring up next to the active adult neighborhoods, the population grew, and new roads, hospitals, schools, and businesses were developed to accommodate the growing population. Tamarac was incorporated in 1963. You can visit the Tamarac Historical Society for an intriguing account of the city's history. While the city's website offers great transparency on plans for the future with a strong focus on development, economic growth, the implementation of technology to better serve the community, and a commitment to inclusion and diversity.
