There are six Jupiter 55+ communities. These active adult communities offer a diverse array of property types that afford very different lifestyles.  For those that are drawn to the water, there are luxury, waterfront condos that boast breathtaking views and boat slips.  There are centrally located attached villas and townhomes that offer proximity to shopping, Jupiter Medical Center, and major freeways.  Residents that don't mind a fifteen-minute drive to the beach may opt for a Jupiter 55+ community further west near nature preserves, wildlife sanctuaries, and golf courses.

As of the 2020 Census, the population was 61,047, with 22.5% of the population age 65 or older.  Situated between Juno Beach and the Martin County line, Jupiter is the northernmost city in Palm Beach County.  The city comprises 23.12 square miles, extending from the densely populated coastline to more rural neighborhoods west of the Turnpike that offer expansive homes situated on lots with acreage, equestrian centers, and exclusive country clubs with lavish private golf courses.  Jupiter Island, a separate municipality from Jupiter, is among the wealthiest towns in the country where many famous people such as Tiger Woods and Celine Dion own multimillion-dollar mansions.

Jupiter Lifestyle

If you love nature and outdoor activities, Jupiter might be the perfect place to retire.  Jupiter affords an active lifestyle with endless opportunities for boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, fishing, and hiking.   Residents enjoy having a pristine beach in their backyard where they can swim in the warm, crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean nearly year-round.  However, the fun is not limited to the beach with so many parks, golf courses, museums, tiki bars, and restaurants in town.

Jupiter is a paradise for nature lovers!  Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Loxahatchee River.  Rent a kayak or canoe from the Jupiter Outdoor Center and paddle through a variety of major habitats from Cypress swamp to freshwater marshes.  This ecological masterpiece provides the ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.  Take your time on this slow-flowing river as you spot alligators, turtles, manatees, wood storks, and osprey along the way.  Riverbend Park and Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park also offer great outdoor adventures where visitors can go hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding, and bird watching.  There are a host of educational opportunities in these historical parks where the Seminole battles of 1838 were fought.  Visitors can watch battle reenactments, hike the battlefield trail, and tour a 1930s sawmill to learn about technological advancements in the 1900s.

There is always something fun to do in Jupiter.  This seaside community exudes Old Florida Charm with a number of tiki bars and casual seafood restaurants.  Catch some live music while sipping a tropical cocktail at a tiki bar overlooking phenomenal views of the Jupiter Inlet at Square Grouper.   Little Moir's Restaurants are great to enjoy a creative seafood dish, shop for fresh fish, and listen to a live local band.  Catch a baseball game at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium or attend a musical at Maltz Jupiter Theatre.  Join the Loxahatchee River Historical Society for an educational tour of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum or shop for some new artwork at MAC Art Galleries, the largest exhibition space in South Florida.  There is an adventure waiting around every corner of this charming seaside town.

Jupiter History

When Spain controlled Florida, they referred to present-day Jupiter as Jobe.  They were trying to name the area after its first inhabitants, the Hobe Tribe, but misspelled the tribe's name due to a difference in phonetics.  When the British took Florida between 1763 and 1783, they misinterpreted Jobe as Jove, the Roman name for Zeus, and Anglicized the name to Jupiter.  Jupiter is the ancient god of light, the sky, and the weather so it is fitting, despite the fact that the original name was lost in translation a few times over. Historian Richard Procyk describes the significance of Jupiter's history as he describes  archeologists' findings in History Town of Jupiter, " Their survey resulted in the assessment of 50 historic, archaeological and architectural sites which include: prehistoric villages and camps, two 19th century Seminole villages, evidence of the two battles fought in the Second Seminole War (January, l838), pioneer homesteads, farms, packing houses; In fact, almost every aspect of human history and inhabitation of Palm Beach County is represented in the park."  Procyk is referring to Riverbend Park, where visitors can still get a glimpse of Jupiter's rich history through guided tours.

The Town of Jupiter was incorporated in 1925.  The founding fathers were thirty-four men that were involved in various business interests in the region.  This motley crew consisted of a pineapple farmer, crude oil distributor, store owner, fisherman, chauffeur, machinist, caretaker of a truck farm, and a blacksmith - just to name a few.  These early pioneers were looking to set up farms and businesses to take advantage of the Florida Land Boom which necessitated new infrastructure and subdivision development to accommodate a growing population. The Florida Land Boom was short-lived and died out shortly after Jupiter's incorporation.  To make matters worse, there was a major hurricane in 1928 that caused significant damage to the young town.

The Great Depression followed, crushing the founding fathers' dreams of a booming city with modern buildings, casinos, and yacht clubs. It wasn't until World War II that Jupiter would see hope for the flourishing city that the founding fathers of Jupiter had envisioned.  Jupiter played an important role in the war effort, providing the perfect location to defend ships carrying war supplies along the coast from German submarines.  Many of the men that were stationed in the area met local women and moved back after the war to start a family in the growing town.  The 1950s and 60s brought a huge population boom to Florida and Jupiter became the thriving community that it is today.
